This singer/songwriter was born (in the 30s) in one of the four U.S. states that is a commonwealth. The state is not Virginia, Pennsylvania or Massachusetts.
He has written more than 10 #1 hit songs with more than 25 that went top 10.

The song I am looking for was written by him and has been covered by a lot of folks. That is the bare truth.
The song mentions a city in Shelby County.

I have said enough for now. If I write too much you might consider me a storyteller.
Who is the singer and what is the song title?
Nov-13: Hint - Get yourself to Shelby County.
Nov-13: Another hint - see what is underlined above. This is where Google can help you.
Nov-14: Another hint - the song title is not "How I Got To Shelby County".

Hi reddevils, It is not Bobby Bare I am looking for but you are on the right track. Bobby Bare did a cover of the song. The singer I am looking for is the person who wrote the song.
The singer was not born in Ohio. In the USA, four states are known as Commonwealth states. I gave three (in my first post) where he wasn't born. Here is another hint. The state has a Derby.
