This U.S. singer is now in her 80s and she still performs.

When I was just a small child, she did a cover of a song that was first recorded by a cowboy a few years earlier. It became a hit.

1. Who is the singer?
2. What is the song?

Hint #1 - Dec8: If you get the "Cowboy" who first recoded the song, the rest will be easy.

With the age I was going to say Jean Shepard. But google says she was born in 1933.

Slewfoot got it. Patti Page - "The Tennessee Waltz". She recorded in 1950, three years after Cowboy Copas recorded it.

Here birth name is Clara Ann Fowler.

Yes, we had thought of Patti Page and the Tennessee Waltz, but hadn't got to the 'cowboy' section, so hadn't included it in the answer - we had to go to town, so left it at that for the time being, until we got back just now.
