j.f., this is how it sounds to me. It's not a country song but I quite like it (both the lyrics and the tune) - a nice calypso beat to it.

DON'T PICK A FIGHT WITH A POET - Madeleine Peyroux
Lyrics by Madeleine Peyroux & Andy Scott Rosen

[C]// // [G]// // [C]// // /
When you're walking on the [G] street,
and the people that you [C] meet,
make you want to start [G] a big fight,
'cause they talk as if [C] they're so right.
There is one thing [G] to remember,
in case you haven't [Am] heard:
You can kill a mighty [F] emperor,
but you [G] cannot smite a [C] word // // /

So, don't [G] pick a fight with a [C] poet.
Don't you [G] raise your hand on a [C] whim.
Whether it's wrong or it's [G] right,
there's a [Am] lesson in life,
and to [F] learn it, you [G] have to give [Am] in // // [D]// //
‘cause the [F] poet knows [G] you can't [C] win // // /

When you're twitching at the [G] bar,
No one knows who you [C] are,
and you want to prove them [G] all wrong,
you think you are [C] so strong.
You can try to make them [G] listen.
You can try to be the [Am] boss,
but the story-[F]-teller is the [G] one
who calls the [C] toss // // /

So, don't [G] pick a fight with a [C] poet.
Don't raise your [G] hand on a [C] whim.
Whether it is wrong or [G] right,
there'll be a [Am] lesson tonight,
and to [F] learn it [G] you'll have to give [Am] in // // [D]// //
'cause a [F] poet knooo-[G]-ows you can't [C] win // // // //

[Am] Over there [E] in the corner [Am] with a Cheshire gr-[E]-in
making [Am] rhyme out of broken hearts [E] cryin' the [Am] hymn.
[G] And two tokes from a [C] good time,
[G] a toast away from [C] fist flying,
[E] congregating the [Am] world
with just [E] paper and [F] pen // // [G]// // // //
[C]// // [G]// // [C]// // // //
[C]// // [G]// // [C]// // // //
[C]// // [G]// // [Am]// // // //
[F]// // [G]// // [Am]// // [D]// //
[F]// // [G]// // [C]// [F]// [C]// //

So, don't [G] pick a fight with a [C] poet.
You don't raise [G] your hand on a [C] whim.
Whether it’s wrong or [G] right,
[Am] there's a lesson tonight,
and to [F] learn it [G] you'll have to give [Am] in // // [D]// //
'cause a [F] poet knooo-[G]-ows you can't [C] win // // // // // // /
