Nashville # system for chords

I wonder if someone would explain this nashville # system to an old man that is 72 years old and loves to play the guitar!!!

That does a decent job although I would not have put 57 down as the 5th chord - I would have left it 5 since a 7th and a major chord are interchangable in most cases...
